Play : Illustration Friday : Little League

My second watercolor painting, and I think maybe this one turned out a little better than the first. I decided to pay a tribute to all the Little League players around the world, now that the summer and the season is winding down. I used ink and watercolor. I thought maybe the ink would help the players stand out against the backround. I think maybe it's not proper or traditional procedure to use ink with the watercolor, but then again, I never was one to follow the rules :)

It looks great, and I for one am a big fan of ink and watercolor. A lot of my watercolors start with pencil sketches, and then after painting I go back with ink. However, I try to use the ink to bring out the effects of the water color, more than the underdrawing. Great piece. Follow your own rules, definately.

This is wonderful. You captured (oops that was last weeks word) the players perfectly.
I think you should use the technique that works best for you.

It's just great and perfect for play. I use anything I want with watercolor to get the results I want.

Really a great watercolor painting! There's nothing says you can't use pen and ink and watercolor, it's called mixed media. For your second watercolor, you really have it down. I like it.

Wow! I think this is really great :) And you know what, I too use ink with watercolour and don't really care whether it's the right thing to do or not! :D Who cares, especially when it turn out as great as yours!

I can feel the action, the mood of the player in this piece.

The only real danger with the ink is that it often is dye-based and has an extremely poor lightfastness rating (ie: will fade fast). This picture is a really assured and professional piece of work!

I wanted to say thanks to everyone for the nice comments! I purchased a Reeve's starter set from the Blick online site, it was $24.95 for 12 tubes of paint, 5 brushes, a pencil, knife, 3 watercolor boards and a tabletop easel- I didn't want to start out with expensive paints being a first timer, in case it didn't work out well. I was so excited to try them out that I finished this weeks topic earlier than I normally would. I guess if I got one good painting from it, then I got my money's worth! Thanks again!
